New NEC Petascale Storage Solution for a multi-disciplinary instrument and research laboratory
Duesseldorf, 15.7.2010 – NEC announced today that it has installed its new high-end storage system, the NEC Petascale Storage Solution, at SOLEIL Synchrotron in France, a public company which provides France with a second source of high-tech synchrotron radiation. The 1.3 petabyte storage solution will store the massive amount of data created by computer simulations and experiments.
SOLEIL covers fundamental research needs in physics, chemistry, material sciences, life sciences, earth sciences and atmospheric sciences. It offers the use of a wide range of spectroscopic methods from infrared to X-rays, and structural methods in X-diffraction and diffusion. SOLEIL, an acronym for “Optimized Source of LURE Intermediary Energy Light,” is a research center located on the Plateau de Saclay in Saint Aubin, Essonne. The particle (electron) accelerator produces the synchrotron radiation, an extremely powerful source of light that permits exploration of inert or living matter.
NEC has provided an intelligent SAS/SATA-based, high-end storage solution which helps the scientists to store their data with the highest level of reliability and data protection in a cost-effective solution. The enterprise-class, cableless system design includes fully redundant, hot-swappable controllers, power and cooling units. All system components are constantly monitored using industry-standard protocols to ensure continuous operation in case of failure or component malfunction. Active Circle as a clustered File Storage system with integrated Security and Tiered Storage management is being installed on all storage nodes. The Active Circle solution is compatible with standard hardware and is particularly well adapted to the management of large volumes of data, natively protecting against errors, corruption and disasters and allowing for the implementation of a multi-tiered storage architecture.
NEC’s storage solution uses NEC VTrak E-Class, a family of intelligent, high-availability, SAS/SATA-based, RAID storage systems to help Soleil protect and manage their data storage demands. Features such as dual active-active RAID controllers assure continous and reliable operation. All Raidsystems are connected to one single server, the NEC HPC 2424Rb-4. NEC’s server andstorage systems including 640 disks are integrated in three 48U racks.
