Scalability, availability and reliability for the new NEC Express5800/R140b-4 server. A platform truly dedicated to virtualisation!

Puteaux, France – 2nd of July 2010 – NEC IT Platform Solutions, a division of NEC Corporation, announces the market availability of the new NEC Express 5800/R140b-4 server. This new version is a replacement for the R140a-4 server and offers companies scalable performance, expandability for all strategic applications and increased reliability through redundancy of components.

Virtualisation – a strategic technology for 2010 according to Gartner!

According to Gartner, virtualisation is one of the ten technologies that will shape the strategies of IT departments in the next three years. It believes that it will have a significant impact on the way companies do business and organise themselves, and the US firm is advising heavy investment.

In response to this need, NEC is offering IT managers this top-of-the-range server dedicated to virtualisation. The R140b-4 is designed for companies running critical applications requiring superior performance, such as large-scale database systems, ERP applications, CRM, Business Intelligence, and not forgetting e-commerce architectures or even company messaging platforms.

NEC is also hoping to meet the needs of the section of the market that is moving towards a mixed Windows/Linux environment with this new four-processor server.

Performance and reliability in a scalable server

The Express5800/R140b-4 supports up to 4 Intel® Xeon® MP 7500 8-core processors in a 4U rack. These eight cores have been designed and optimised so that they do not increase the load or electricity consumption within infrastructures. They are on average 3 times more efficient and quicker than their predecessors in the 7400 series. The Intel Xeon 7500 series processors also ensure optimised performance and superior scalability, in particular for the memory capacity, which is doubled in comparison to the old generation server.

Companies will also benefit from improved RAS functions (reliability, continuity of service and ease of intervention). These features integrated as standard are designed to maintain the company’s data integrity, to increase availability and limit scheduled interruptions, and to keep strategic applications online.

In order to meet future requirements, NEC is offering IT managers a highly scalable solution with application deployment flexibility and the option of adding processors (up to 4), memory (up to 512 GB) and storage capacity (up to 4.8 TB), with integrated input/output slots. This means that the infrastructure deployed is able to evolve in line with company requirements, thus reducing the costs involved. Gartner reminds us that the budgets companies will have for infrastructure in 2010 will be down by 30%.

1 new R140b-4 server can replace 20 old ones!
Just 1 R140b-4 server does the job of up to 20 single-core servers from the 2005 generation. Plus it reduces electricity consumption by more than 92%, while saving 95% of the space.

Simplified administration for improved company productivity
Supplied as standard with the EXPRESSSCOPE® and ESMPRO® complete solution for improved remote management, the solution enables remote monitoring and control of each server, regardless of the status of the OS and even if the platform has been powered down via a web browser. This limits the intervention required by technical teams, which minimises support and administration costs, downtime and the company’s energy consumption.

2 new features are available in the new NEC Express5800/R140b-4 server:

  • Proactive alert maintenance and early intervention service, “ExpressReport”. This service aims to considerably reduce system downtime by automatically detecting problems via the “NEC Maintenance Center” service, and analysing and correcting system failures proactively.
  • Continuous update service, “Express Update”. This feature verifies installed versions on one or more servers and notifies administrators when new versions are available, so that these can be updated automatically.

The NEC Express5800/R140b-4 server is available immediately for €10,079 (excl. tax) for a basic specification. For a more comprehensive specification with the new 8-core CPUs, the recommended retail price is €32,159.
